Horses age faster than humans. While their lives progress more quickly, serious medical conditions do too. Annual horse wellness exams at the time of vaccination can help detect serious medical conditions and allowing our facility to treat them before their status becomes unmanageable. In seeing your veterinarian bi-annually, you have the opportunity to discuss your horse’s future health outlook, and ask questions about any existing conditions. Prior to your horse’s wellness exam, note any severe changes that have occurred with your horse including: coughing, weight gain/loss, excessive thirst, and changes in hair coat. If your horse is experiencing any of these symptoms or has developed any abnormal behavior since their last wellness exam, please inform the veterinarian.

During your horse wellness exam we can perform:

  • Complete dental exam
  • Physical exam
  • Lab tests (blood work and fecal egg count)
  • Health certificates & Coggins Tests

Young horse exams

Foals are not like adults horses. Foals require vaccinations at 6 and 7 months of age and deworming according to parasite exposure risks. Examinations of young foals may spot early disease issues such as infected joints or angular limb deformities. Feeding and weaning programs are determined based on each foals environment. We encourage you to discuss your foal’s needs with our veterinarians.

Adult horse exams

Similar to a younger horse exam, our veterinarians will examine your adult horse from head-to-tail, assessing all of the organs, checking joint function, and recording vital statistics to ensure normal health. If there are any pressing irregularities, further diagnostics might be necessary. Horse owners are encouraged to consult with the veterinarian about their horse’s current diet and eating habits, and discuss healthier options (if any).

Senior horse exams

Senior horses require more care than their youthful counterparts. Older horses are more susceptible to age-related illnesses such as PPID (Cushings), metabolic syndrome, laminitis, and neoplasia. During senior horse exams, our veterinarians take your horse’s vital statistics and perform a complete head-to-tail exam of heart, lungs, abdomen, and joints, assessing any abnormalities or pain your horse might be exhibiting.
